The main character in my summer reading book
The Fault in Our Stars is a girl named Hazel who has terminal cancer. Throughout the book this complex character developed in many ways. At the beginning of the book, she was hopeless and isolated. By the end of the book, Hazel was living life in the moment and had connections with friends and family. This change of character began when Hazel met Gus. His outlook on life was that you can find happiness no matter how bad things get. At the beginning of the book Hazel was did not interact with many people besides her parents. "My parents were my two best friends. My third best friend was an author who did not know I existed."(Green 12) But by the end of the book, Hazel found she had support and love from more people in her life that she never realized.

This article describes how the writing of The Fault in Our Stars used humor to lighten up such serious topics such as cancer and death. Also it talked about how the characters make light of their terrible situations to make cancer not seem like a such scary thing. But, at the end of the day cancer is cancer and there will be low points but John Green did a great job of showing that they are not alone and there is always people to catch you when you fall.
